News: Windows 10 Technical preview

The Windows 10 (previously 9) technical preview has been released for download. If you want to try it for yourself head on over to http://preview.windows.com

Hang on, what happened to Windows 9? Good question, something to do with legacy (shoddy) code. Personally i think they want to distance themselves as much as possible from Windows 8.

To download the preview you will need to participate in the Windows Insider Program. You can either download the .ISO (3,79 GB) or download the installer.

Features of Windows 10:

– ‘The aim for Windows 10 is to finally create a seamless experience for all devices with one OS: smartphones, tablets, and full-fledged computers.’
– A more traditional start menu (with live tiles, hybrid menu)
– Better support for touch and mouse/keyboard
– Multiple ‘Desktops’
– Snapping 4 windows on screen, instead of two in previous versions
– New app store

What to expect from the technical preview:

– Bugs
– Incompatibility with some hardware and software
– Lots of updates

What do i need to run Windows 10:

– A test machine, spare PC (or VM environment) with the following spec:

  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
  • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
  • Free hard disk space: 16 GB
