How to: Install phpVirtualBox on Synology DSM

This post will explain the steps required to successfully install VirtualBox on a Synology NAS running DSM 5.0 – build 4.5.2.8 allowing you to run Virtual Machines (VM’s) from your Synology NAS appliance. I was using my HP Proliant N40L Microserver as a test bench, with Intel chipset and 16GB ram.

Step 1. Download the phpVirtualBox package.

Step 2. Open Package Center

Step 3. Click ‘Manual Install’

Step 4. Click ‘Browse’ and select the .spk package

Step 5. Type a admin password and check the boxes next to ‘Enable Advanced Config’ and ‘Enable startup of VM’s’

    • DSM 6.0 isn’t compatible afaik. There is a package available for x86 architecture running DSM versions 5.2, that was the latest compatible version last time i checked.
